It's Time to Globalize the Resistance!
Latin America Solidarity Conference

In the 1980's, solidarity activists stood together against US imperialism and ruthless dictatorship in Latin America, preventing a direct military invasion of Nicaragua and El Salvador, providing sanctuary for Guatemalan and Salvadorian refugees fleeing military massacre, and bearing public witness to the human rights violations committed by the United States government and collaborating Latin American regimes.

Now, faced with corporate globalization, the approach of the Free Trade Area of Americas (FTAA) discussion at a summit meeting next April, and a renewal of United States militarism in Latin America, members of the Latin American solidarity community will unite again to form collective strategies at a second Latin America Solidarity Conference (LASC II) on March 17-18, 2001 at the International Conference Center in Chicago. This follows a very successful conference in Washington, DC, on April 15, 2000 where 600 activists heard from 20 Latin American speakers on the wide array of hemispheric issues confronting the solidarity movement.

Goals of the Conference
At LASC II, we will develop analyses, coordinating strategies, and calls to action for solidarity work throughout Latin America in response to the many harmful and damaging aspects of globalization. The conference will address each of the following 11 topic areas: democracy, militarization, corporate globalization, trade, the environment, labor, indigenous peoples, women's issues, rural/agricultural concerns, human rights, and immigration.

Forming a Collective Strategy
For each of the topic areas, a pre-conference working group of interested organizations will hold discussions to draft a working "mini-manifesto," a brief document including statements of principle, positions on relevant US and international policy, and calls to action for US activists, which will be finalized in conference workshops and consolidated with the others into a single strategy and position manifesto for the conference.
