Welcome to Northumberland for Global Awareness
In the small county of Northumberland, Ontario, Canada resistance is building against the Free Trade
Area of the Americas
What is the FTAA?????????
Here are some groups that are currently involved:
- Port Hope High School Social Justice Group
- St. Mary's High School Social Justice Group
- Other local anti-poverty groups
People from a diverse variety of citizen's groups in Northumberland are working together for a
common cause, against a society based on greed and exploitation and for one formed around the
principles of mutual aid, equity and freedom. We are not a group which is organising to push a
dogmatic agenda or trying to gain power. Instead we are simply a group of concerned citizens taking
direct action to make our community, and the world, a better place.
Around the issues of the FTAA, we are planning a wide variety of awareness raising events in the
community. These include:
- Benefit Show
The PHHS Social Justice Group is putting on a benefit show to raise money for other FTAA related
events, and to raise awareness about the FTAA itself. It is being held at Port Hope High School on
Friday March 30rd. There will be a variety of great bands playing, ranging from folk to punk to
reggae and the cost is $5 at the door, which opens at 7pm.
- Murray Dobbin Event
Murray Dobbin, prominent activist and writer with the Council of Canadians will be speaking about
the GATS (General Agreement on Trade In Service), the WTO and how it will impact local
communities, on Tuesday March 27th at the Cobourg Public Library. The event costs just two dollars
and begins at 7pm.
- Horizons of Friendship/Green Party/Northumberland Community Coalition Workshop
Including panelists from The Ontario Federation of Agriculture, Women's Movement in El Salvador,
Steelworkers Union and the Ontario Federation of Labour, this is an event about the FTAA and
corporate free trade in general, and how it will negatively effect Northumberland and the rest of the
world. 7-9pm on March 30 at the Golden Plough lodge, admission is free.
- RightsAction Events
Speakers from the social justice organisation RightsAction will be speaking at Port Hope High School
and the Cobourg Library on the FTAA and its negative effects on the impoverished peoples of Latin
America. The PHHS event starts at 1:30pm and the Cobourg one begins at 7pm?. All are invited to
attend.
- Speakers Forum
On April 10th St. Mary's High School will be holding a day long event for students about trade, the
FTAA and other issues. It will be opened up to the public later on in the evening. The keynote
speaker will Maude Barlow of the Council of Canadians.
- On to Quebec!
Northumberland Against the FTAA will be working with other area citizens groups to provide
transportation to the Quebec City demonstrations some time before April 20th. More info to come.
